twinkle, twinkle

It’s been a long time between blogs…
I’ve become a bit of a recreational runner lately (as opposed to a full time ultra runner)

Tonight I lace up and head into the darkness, the glow of headlights and dim street lamps guide my way down a very familiar path. The route I run near my home is pretty enough but after 100 times on this path the scenery is far from impressive, instead I can retreat into my thoughts and process some ideas I’ve neglected. Soon enough I can veer off the path and deeper into the darkness as I leave the suburbs behind and glide into the rural township that adjoins my estate to bush land. Here the light pollution is weakened and the stars make their presence known. Small animals hidden in the scrub scurry away when they hear my foot falls and we scare each other in equal measure. I’m glad to be running again. I’ve cut down a lot on what I was previously doing and this new routine of “running by feel” seems a lot more sustainable and less like a second job.

I was inspired by some very green runners at work, who have just been bitten by “the bug” and are now on their own path in running. When they found out what my running background was they were very impressed and I was flattered to help them with their many questions about the sport…re-living those thoughts of good times has brought me back to the trail tonight, funny how that works.

I’ve had to reassess some goals lately, not just in running but in life. I’m glad I have this sport to fall back on and the amazing people who keep this going in Perth.  For now I’m happy to get an hour under the stars.
